MADRID — If 90 minutes wasn’t enough time for the Madrid matchup to get on the board, two 15 minute halves of extra time wasn’t going to do it either. Sergio Ramos’ penalty kick determined Real Madrid’ fate, defeating Atlético Madrid four goals to one in the penalty shootout claiming their 11th Spanish Super Cup title.
Late in the second half of extra time Federico Valverde committed a crucial foul preventing Atletico Madrid’s Alvao Morata from scoring, earning a red card. Despite the controversy Valverde was awarded Man of the Match.
Dani Carvajal, Rodrygo and Luka Modrić contributed Real Madrid’s other penalties, while Atlético Madrid’s came from Kieran Trippier.
The 38th tournament amongst Spain’s best football took place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia at Rey Abdullah de Yeda Stadium. The top teams in La Liga and the Copa del Rey finalists compete.
The Spanish Super Cup Final became “The Madrid Derby” after Real Madrid defeated Copa del Rey Champions Valencia 3-1 in the semi-finals and Atlético Madrid fought back beating first in La Liga Barcelona, 3-2 securing their spot in the final.
