The 124th running of the Boston Marathon was originally set to take place Monday April 20, 2020. Also known as Patriots Day, observed each year on the third Monday in April commemorating the battles of Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts during the American Revolutionary War. Due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19 the historic race was postponed until September 14, 2020.

In past years the Marathon was even held during times of war. The Boston Marathon serves as a sign of resilience and strength. Seven years ago tragedy struck the world’s oldest marathon as a major attack occurred at the Finish Line of the Boston Marathon. Three people lost their lives, hundreds more were injured and an entire city, state and country felt their hearts hurting.

Despite all the pain and sadness felt on that day the city of Boston came together stronger than before. Each sports team and individual in New England did their part to bring peace and healing to the city.

The phrase Boston Strong has united a city once torn apart. Each year on April 15th since that horrific day, recognized as One Boston Day, Boston honors all that lost their lives and who were injured.

Like several races many participants in the Boston Marathon are known for raising thousands of dollars, running for charitable organizations.

So this year, as April 15th marked the seventh anniversary and Monday April 20th did not have thousands of runners on the streets, the city will remain Boston Stronger when together as we fight this pandemic.
