HYANNIS, MA — Sturgis East boys lacrosse and Pope John Paul II High School battled it out Friday afternoon at Simpkins Field in South Yarmouth, MA to bring the Lyons a step closer to a playoff spot with their 8-7 victory over the Sturgis Storm.

Griffin Hough, Mike Valerio, Caleb Richardson and PJ Lawson each scored two goals apiece for Pope John Paul (9-9, 9-3 C&I) contributing to the Lyons victory.

“It was pretty gutsy play because we’re really injured right now. I was playing with second and third string players so they stepped up and were able to get some good goals and keep it into the W column so I thought they played gritty,” said Pope John Paul II Head Coach Jay Detjens.

Despite the tough loss for Stugis East (6-12, 6-6 C&I), the Storm showed their grit with 12 face-offs won while the Lyons had six.

“It starts with defense PJ Lawson is one of my captains he had a big day, Jake is another long pole of mine I really rely on and then Colin who busted his shoulder at the end of the game, he was a good hustler he played attack and midfield. I thought he was really key and other than that we were better at keeping the ball off the ground which is good it was a good overall effort,” said Detjens.

Noah Smith recorded a hat trick for the Sturgis Storm while Ben Bradley, Floyd Abagat and Gilloy each put one goal on the board as well as two assists from Franz Abagat.

The cross town opponents matched up well but the Lyons showed they weren’t going to hold out putting one in net with under 30 seconds left to secure the win. Patrick Lawson of Pope John Paul scored with 13 seconds of play remaining giving the Lyons the go ahead point.

“It was good the other team had it and wanted it more. We played well, we just didn’t have enough time,” said Sturgis East Head Coach Andrew Watts.

Sturgis East celebrated Senior Day recognizing Jake Cooper and Captain Carl Ferria for their commitment to the program at half time during today’s game.

“I believe we’re going to make the playoffs, we’re even 500 in our total schedule and nine and three in the conference, so I think that should get us to qualify we’ll probably be the lowest seed out there but we should make it,”said Detjens.
